AZ Awards 2024 Finalist: Die Macherei München by HWKN (U.S.) with Ochs Schmidhuber Architekten and M3 Architekten (Germany)

Past and future converge at this Munich development built on a former industrial site, which is part of the first LEED Gold neighbourhood in Europe. Consisting of a hotel, a co-working space, offices, retail and restaurants, the six buildings help to transform the once-barren area into a hub of pedestrian-centric activity: At street level, the “canyons” between the buildings welcome foot traffic with public seating and large planters — and the buildings themselves add to the dynamism with contrasting brick walls painted in a cheerful range of reds, oranges and yellows.

These masonry facades pay homage to the city’s history as a brick-making centre and provide a visual link to Munich’s landmark Frauenkirche cathedral, also made of brick. The most energetic building in the ensemble: the Scandic München Macherei hotel, a sculpturally stacked 10-storey structure with a zigzagging elevation.

Team: Matthias Hollwich, Jessica Knobloch-Arscott and Robert May with Martin Safar, Axelle Zemouli, Malika Hamdi, Todd Shapiro and Laura Yang (HWKN); Fabian Ochs and Tom Fechtner (OSA); Bernhard Wolff and Martina Will (M3 Architekten); Art-Invest Real Estate Management GmbH & Co.; and Accumulata Real Estate Management GmbH
