Today, seemingly everyone is building with cross-laminated timber, but Toronto studio Cornecelli is seeking to do it differently. The firm has designed a warming hut, called Warmth of the Wood Pile, to be situated near The Forks, in Winnipeg. The hut is not meant to be constructed with the familiar post-and-slab technique. Instead, it features large panels of CLT fastened together into a tapered volume. A trough-like silo on the roof is calibrated to funnel snow into a discreet pile on the floor, inviting residents to build a fire and send the runoff back to the nearby river.
