The town of Ras, in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, regularly sees temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius. When Mumbai architect Sanjay Puri was hired to build a school in the area, he knew he’d have to contend with the desert sun. His Rajasthan School features an outdoor playground that sits beneath a network of trapezoidal frames, resulting in patches of welcome shade.

The classrooms, all outfitted with massive sunblocking louvres, face northward, away from the glare. The architecture is angular and sculptural, its red and yellow hues that reference local styles of dress making both the exterior and interiors strikingly vibrant.
