Aging public housing projects present an interesting challenge in many cities. Rather than demolish them, as has been routine practice in the past, Douglas Min Yi Lee proposes embracing them even more boldly into the urban fabric. To demonstrate this idea, Lee created Common Sky, a plan to revitalize Alton Estate, a London building with a grid-like framework. Lee would extend the grid upward, adding a second structure atop the original. The rectilinear spaces could then be filled with modular inserts of varying sizes, depending on the occupants’ needs. Why bulldoze the mistakes of the past when you can adapt them to the demands of the present?
