Constantly born anew, FLIPPOP Art Space is a 10-by-10-metre room in a Shanghai laneway. In the seven years since its inception, it’s been a gallery, performance space, salon, restaurant and storefront, depending on the whims of its temporary occupants. The most intriguing feature at the site is the entrance, a stainless-steel grid that rotates to open, like a speakeasy door. Sometimes, that grid doubles as a display case, a shelf or a light box with a backlit mural. Sometimes, it’s just an urban folly, the kind that invites passersby to slow down and indulge their curiosity.
