Fittingly, this retail concept space with more than a passing resemblance to Bruce Wayne’s Batcave is located beneath a park in Chengdu, China. A rigid layout balanced by ample use of warm wood and raw stone accents, the “underground fashion piazza” strictly adheres to a 1.8-metre grid motif in everything from its flooring materials to the composition of its display racks to the luminous ceiling, which is supported by steel columns that also form part of an adjustable shelving system. The ceiling apparatus neatly conceals all the site’s lighting, fire control and ventilation equipment, augmenting the austere mystique of Linforni.
