Nightingale Ballarat harks back to the mid–19th century, when a gold rush transformed its southeastern Australian city into a boom town. As a nod to historic vernacular, Breathe outfitted the facade with tall arches made of salvaged brick. The firm also buried the power cables, added exterior parkettes and pedestrian benches, allocated 20 per cent of the units for affordable housing and pulled the site back from the property line, allowing space for deep-rooted canopy trees. The Nightingale complex honours the Ballarat of the past — and the Ballarat of the future, too.
