In the fall of 2020, Lauren Goodman, a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, decided on a whim to dig through a nearby scrap-metal bin. The materials she collected — industrial offcuts, steel tubing, rebar — became the basis for the Providence Project, a suite of welded furniture comprising a stool, a chair and a table. The work explores the creative possibilities embedded in seemingly worthless objects. It’s also an experiment in place- based design; had she done this project elsewhere, it would’ve been completely different — though surely no less inventive.
