AZ Awards 2022 Finalist: The Ordinance of the Subconscious Treatment by Atelier Duyi Han

An architectural manifestation of a psychic experience, this ArtBnB apartment is part clinic, part sculptural installation. It evokes themes of convalescence, anxiety and psychiatric health. Some of the symbolism is scientific in nature: the silk furniture coverings, for instance, are embroidered with images of neurochemical molecules. Other symbols, like the upholstery and terrazzo floors, evoke a typical Chinese apartment. Others still, like the incense burner with a model pagoda on top, are just flat-out surreal. The installation feels both recuperative and disorienting — much like a stay in a hospital.
