Project
The Rajasthan School
Location
Ras, India
Firm
Sanjay Puri Architects, India
Summary
The town of Ras, in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, regularly sees temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius. When Mumbai architect Sanjay Puri was hired to build a school in the area, he knew he’d have to contend with the desert sun. His Rajasthan School features an outdoor playground that sits beneath a network of trapezoidal frames, resulting in patches of welcome shade. The classrooms, all outfitted with massive sunblocking louvres, face northward, away from the glare. The architecture is angular and sculptural, its red and yellow hues that reference local styles of dress making both the exterior and interiors strikingly vibrant.

Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum
Location
Jingdezhen, China
Firm
Studio Zhu-Pei, Beijing, China
Summary
For almost 1,700 years, the city of Jingdezhen in southeastern China has been synonymous with porcelain production. It’s this rich history that the sprawling Imperial Kiln Museum, designed by Studio Zhu-Pei, honours and celebrates. In fact, during the site’s excavation, the architecture team uncovered a set of Ming dynasty ruins, and rather than relocate the foundations, Zhu enveloped the remnants in his 10,370-square-metre scheme, transforming them into five sunken courtyards.
Finalist
Project
Nancy and Rich Kinder Building
Location
Houston, U.S.
Firm
Steven Holl Architects, U.S.
Summary
The Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, a home for international contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is clad in translucent glass tubes — which is only one of many poetic touches that architect Steven Holl situated throughout the project. In this case, it also doubles as a sustainability feature, reducing solar gain by 70 per cent. The soaring lobby looks out in all directions onto lush native vegetation, while the gallery ceilings have suspended cloud-like forms that channel and filter sunlight, illuminating the space without overwhelming it. At night, the gallery glows like a beacon, reflecting light onto the water gardens that adorn the property.

Project
Lahofer Winery
Location
Dobšice, Czech Republic
Firm
Chybik + Kristof Architects & Urban Designers, Czech Republic
Summary
The design of the Lahofer Winery in the Czech municipality of Dobšice has two influences: local architecture and the surrounding landscape. Thus architects Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof set the tasting room beneath ribbed concrete arches reminiscent of a traditional vaulted wine cellar. The structure supports an undulating roof that rises, hill-like, from the ground, forming an outdoor amphitheatre where patrons can sit and drink. Inside, on the exposed ceiling between the ribs, artist Patrik Hábl drew an abstract mural in reds, blacks and browns to evoke the rich Moravian soil.

Project
Kathleen Andrews Transit Garage
Location
Edmonton, Canada
Firm
Gh3*, Canada
Summary
Urban infrastructure can be iconic. Look no further than the Kathleen Andrews Transit Garage in Edmonton, a 50,000-square-metre complex with space for 300 buses, along with maintenance bays, offices and training areas. Toronto firm Gh3* — a master at making bold statements with industrial builds — adorned the KATG in austere, monochrome finishes: corrugated stainless-steel walls and polished concrete floors. But it also included novel flourishes, like five abstracted light boxes on the roof and a restored heritage smokestack, which appear like follies in an otherwise stark landscape. Everything about the KATG is monumental — to wonderful effect.

The architectural design, meanwhile, borrowed directly from brick kilns. Zhu adapted the region’s traditional method of building the porcelain-firing enclosures in order to create the museum’s eight barrel-vaulted structures, but with an innovative sliding scaffolding system he devised to support the construction of their concrete shells.
