AZ Awards Winner 2022: Take-out by Rodrigo Torres for Landscape Forms

With a minimal form that packs a massive punch, Take-Out upgrades the conventional picnic table to one that is dynamic, adaptable and accessible to all — not to mention extremely good-looking. Devised by Milan-based Colombian designer Rodrigo Torres to be a “toolbox for tailoring togetherness,” the collection of outdoor connected-seat tables encourages all different types of gatherings — from intimate one-on-ones to boisterous social affairs — and enhances the enjoyment of public spaces through thoughtful details and robust versatility.

“A new take on an old idea, this fun and vibrant piece offers flexibility, inclusivity and ease of use. Suitable for commercial, residential and educational settings, it’s a brilliant outdoor solution.”

AZ Awards Winner 2022: Take-out by Rodrigo Torres for Landscape Forms

Recognizing that how people sit in relation to one another can impact emotional connection, the comprehensive series includes five silhouettes (single-, double- and triple-seaters, as well as wheelchair-accessible left- and right-hand triples) that can be freely positioned, depending on the nature of the gathering. Casual and informal? Place them side by side and watch the day go by. Collaborating on a project? Set them up face to face for better focus. Sharing a communal meal? Arrange facing pairs end to end for an ever-expanding dining table.

Made from thin sheet steel with extruded aluminum frames (in a palette of 10 glossy colourways, six metallics and six low-sheen options), the tables are super-lightweight and easy to move around. And, of course, comfort was not over-looked: Torres cleverly curved the edges of the tabletops and seats just so in order to alleviate pressure points on elbows and behind knees, while the open design allows for side or back entry, meaning no clambering over those already seated. With its well-considered design, flexible attributes and ability to foster positive personal connections, Take-Out makes for a commanding presence in any outdoor setting. Who knew a picnic table could be so exciting?
