AZ Awards 2022 Finalist: Stormwater Facility by gh3*

The Stormwater Facility by Toronto firm gh3* is an elegant solution to an inelegant problem. The city’s sewer system is so poorly designed that it frequently overflows, sending filthy water into nearby Lake Ontario. The new facility collects and purifies that water before releasing it back into nature. The building is not only functional, though; it’s also striking, with its austere concrete structure and prismatic form, reminiscent of a cistern turned inside out. It is the kind of project that people have come to expect from gh3*, a firm known for turning prosaic infrastructure into art.
