It took close to a decade to transform this derelict Victorian inn into a modern boutique hotel and dining complex in the heart of Picton, Ontario. From the reception desk upholstered in 19th-century-style floral fabric to cross-stitched vinyl mesh headboards inspired by embroidery hoops to elevator cages rendered in industrial metal mesh, Toronto firm Giannone Petricone found countless creative ways to celebrate the building’s many eras in its carefully considered details. This respectful contrast between past and present, rural and urban, is a recurring theme in the design of The Royal and helped the new building to become a benchmark for future heritage conservation efforts in Prince Edward County.
