The Wooden House by the Lake by Appels Architekten in Bavaria is much more than the sum of its parts. Rather than construct a stick building, the Zurich firm prefabricated a suite of CLT cubes, each corresponding to a private room, then had them assembled on site. The negative space between these units became the home’s communal areas, all of them decked out with silky concrete and tactile oak finishes. And the final exterior flourishes — the dramatic single-pitched roof, the elegant black spruce cladding — knit the components together into a cohesive whole.
